Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid

What it does

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Unlike water-soluble exfoliants, it is oil-soluble, so it can work inside the pore to dissolve the mix of oil and dead skin that leads to blackheads and breakouts. That makes it one of the most useful ingredients for oily and acne-prone skin.

What to know

It is typically used at 0.5–2%. Because it exfoliates, it can be drying or a little irritating if overused, so dry and sensitive skin should go gently and build up frequency. As with most exfoliating actives, daily sunscreen is a good idea while you use it.

Commonly found in

Cleansers, toners, spot treatments, and exfoliating serums.
